PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The Castaño family is the force that changed the trajectory of Yecla's wine industry. Determined to move away from the bulk wine production model and win the region DO status, the Castaños invested heavily in replanting vineyards, upgrading their winery and marketing. Their risky endeavor paid off; DO status was awarded - and American importer Eric Solomon took notice. He was the first major player in the industry to recognize that Yecla was a gold mine and started bringing Castaño wines to American markets, where they enjoy a cult following of budget-conscious wine lovers unwilling to sacrifice on quality - just like YOU!

Hécula, named for the old Roman name for the region is an old-vine Monastrell sourced from two districts, Las Gruesas & Pozuelo, both in the northern part of the DO of Yecla. Here the soils are high in lime content and at a higher elevation than the rest of the region, the Monastrell is dense and rich but with balanced acidity and ripe tannins. The grapes for Hécula are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with a maceration of 10 days, followed by aging in French and American oak barrels.* It is fleshy, ripe, and full-bodied, with a velvety-smooth mouthfeel, explosive flavors of cassis and plum, and accents of sweet baking spice.

90 points, Decanter:
“Mint freshness on the nose with confected cherry aromas. A succulent palate with great fruit supported by oak spice raspberry acidity.”

89 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:
“The 2015 Hécula is pure old-vine Monastrell from dry-farmed, head-pruned vineyards on limestone soils within their Las Gruesas and Pozuelo estates in the higher part of the Yecla appellation. Different plots are fermented differently, and the wine aged for an average of six months in barrique.....The palate is polished with some fine-grained tannins. 144,000 bottles produced.”
