Glen Carlou Vineyards is minutes away from the university town of Stellenbosch and less than 35 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. Situated in the Simonsberg-Paarl region of South Africa’s Western Cape, the estate was transformed from being a dairy farm in 1985 to a winery by Walter Finlayson, whose original plantings were of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. He sold the property to the Swiss-based Hess Group; 13 years later, in 2016, it was transferred back to local ownership when a South African consortium purchased the estate. Today, the winery consists of 31 blocks in Paarl planted to a wide variety of grapes that flourish in this viticulturally rich land.
Today's wine is a monovarietal (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) that was stainless-steel fermented and aged for 15 months in 2nd use French oak. It is indeed rich and full, with dominant aromas and flavors of blackberry and cassis. On the palate, supporting notes of cocoa, vanilla and baking spice add complexity. Silky tannins and moderate acidity bring the wine to a long and satisfying finish.
