AH, PINOT NOIR...
No varietal has captured the hearts, minds, and palates of American wine lovers like this Burgundian treasure. High-maintenance, temperamental, and mercurial, pinot noir is notoriously difficult to cultivate, but when it is in the right hands and the conditions of terroir are favorable, the results are pure magic. It's about time that we dedicated an event to this ethereal grape; join us for our next Fine Wine Discovery Series in NEEDHAM on Thursday, May 19th for "Pinot Noir on Parade: Red, Rosé, & Sparkling Wine!"
Pinot noir is capable of producing divinely scented, gorgeously fruity expressions of place, says noted Master of Wine Jancis Robinson. "Pinot noir can communicate the difference in terroir, or grape-growing environment, between adjacent plots of vineyards. The fascination of pinot noir as expressed through the lens of various producers, terroirs, and vinification styles astounds!"
While the appellations of Burgundy are considered to be standard-bearers for the production of pinot noir, winemakers around the world have made it their mission to craft pinot noir wines of their own. They have succeeded in cool-climate regions such as Carneros and the Sonoma Coast in California and Oregon's Willamette Valley. Just across France's eastern border in Germany, pinot noir is known as spätburgunder and is the country's most highly regarded red wine grape.
In addition to compelling red wines, pinot noir is the star of many of the world's finest rosés and sparkling wines. It is one of the three grapes used in Champagne, and it has been instrumental in the worldwide surge in popularity of rosés.
