Masseria Li Veli is owned by the Falvo family, former proprietors of the Avignonesi winery in Tuscany. The name of their winery is an homage to Puglia's agricultural history; "masserias" were buildings that dotted the landscape and were constructed to provide shelter for the region's farm workers. Masseria Li Veli was located near the center of the Salento Peninsula in southern Puglia, on the southern slopes of the Murgia plateau. Like many of the masserias in Puglia, it had fallen into a state of disrepair. The Falvos purchased Masseria Li Veli along with 128 acres of land with the goal of restoring the property and establishing a winery that honors the native varietals, terroir, and winemaking traditions of Puglia.
Today’s wine is a mono-varietal (100% primitivo) sourced from 18-year-old vines and aged for 9 months in 225-liter French oak barrels. It is rich and ripe and redolent with ripe red and black fruits layered with sweet baking spices, brambly earth, and a thread of bright acidity.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
“Lifted aromas of crushed red pepper, cracked black pepper and tar sit over a dense dark berry core on the nose. There's ample richness on the palate in lush dark berry flavors yet it's lifted by an equal force of bright acidity. This shows good progression and structure, offering a balance between power and precision. (11/1/19)
