The Castaño family is the force that changed the trajectory of Yecla's wine industry. Determined to move away from the bulk wine production model and win the region DO status, the Castaños invested heavily in replanting vineyards, upgrading their winery and marketing. Their risky endeavor paid off; DO status was awarded - and American importer Eric Solomon took notice. He was the first major player in the industry to recognize that Yecla was a gold mine and started bringing Castaño wines to American markets, where they enjoy a cult following of budget-conscious wine lovers unwilling to sacrifice on quality - just like YOU!
Today's offer is made from 100% organically-farmed Monastrell (Mourvèdre) sourced from 30-60-year-old vines. The juice was stainless-steel fermented and aged in concrete tanks to allow the wine's vibrant, fresh fruit characters to take center stage on the palate. Check out the press!
90 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"I hadn't encountered their entry-level, young and unoaked Monastrell for a while, but I tasted the 2016 Monastrell, which fermented in stainless steel and was kept in concrete vats for four to six months. They used some 25% to 30% full clusters in the vinification, and I've never smelled anything like this from Castaño. This is floral and fresh, elegant and balanced, with moderate extraction, ripe tannins and a very pleasant mouthfeel with clean, focused flavors. This is almost too serious for the price. Wow!"
