Côtes de Castillon is a treasure trove of wines that score high on the price-to-quality ratio. Located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, it has only recently been granted AOC status in the region. The soil, made primarily of clay and limestone, is a match made in heaven with the Merlot grape, which dominates here. (Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc grown here ain't too shabby, either.) The Château de Pitray ranks among the best reds that we have had from this region.
The 2016 Château de Pitray is a blend of 75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec. Unoaked in order to let its ripe fruit characters shine, it is redolent on the nose and palate with black raspberries and blackberries, with accents of baking spice, savory herbs, and sagebrush. Striking the perfect balance between lush texture and vibrant acidity, it is a wine that you can drink with a wide variety of foods or sans cuisine.
