Wine lover Gabrielle Mastrojanni established his estate in 1975 after leaving his career as an attorney in Rome for the rolling hills of Tuscany. This visionary bought the San Pio and Loreto properties in the hamlet of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in Montalcino because he saw vast potential where others saw neglect and ruin. He knew that the terroir here - comprised of clay, limestone, and sandstone - could help him craft wines that would rival others produced in Montalcino. He was so right! Today, his forty+-year-old vines coax exactly what they need from the soil and sun to produce concentrated grapes that bring forth top-notch wines.
The 2014 Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese crafted from Crus Vigna Schiena d'Asino and the Vigna Loreto and is aged in Allier oak for 36 months, followed by an additional 6 months of bottle aging in the cellar. It is a breathtakingly elegant mix of red cherries, strawberries, wet stone, sagebrush, and tobacco that beautifully unfold on the palate layer by layer.
91 points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Mastrojanni's 2014 Brunello di Montalcino (with 39,000 bottles made) opens to a dark garnet color with some amber-crimson hues at the edges. The wine presents a lovely velvety texture that is smooth and silky to the end. The folks at Mastrojanni were forced to make a huge sacrifice in this difficult vintage and they ended up dropping one-third of the fruit. They saved the very best to make Brunello in 2014. Because the cru selections were not produced, fruit from the Vigna Schiena d'Asino and the Vigna Loreto ended up here instead. The wine shows bright aromatic intensity with wild berry, moist earth, and grilled herb, but the mouthfeel is compact and streamlined. I recommend a near or medium-term drinking window." (01/19)
91 points, James Suckling:
"Pretty floral and berry aromas with hints of licorice follow through to a medium body, fine, soft tannins and a succulent finish. Lovely wine now." (01/19)
Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, 91 points:
"Inviting aromas of pipe tobacco, wild berry, forest floor, crushed herb, and a whiff of cocoa lead the way on this polished red. Linear and precise, the medium-bodied palate shows cherry, cranberry, tangy orange zest, and star anise framed in vibrant acidity and polished tannins." (05/19)
