PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The AOC of Costières de Nîmes has been reassigned from Languedoc to the Rhône Valley, but its stature as a giant among regions that score high on the price-to-quality ratio is constant. With a history of winemaking that spans centuries, Costières de Nîmes produces complex wines that beautifully display a seamless interplay between grape and terroir.
Château L'Ermite d'Auzan is an estate with a history dating back to the 11th century. It is currently owned by the Castillon family, who have been tirelessly working their 80 hectares of vineyards with passion and reverence for their terroir for four generations. Their south-facing vineyards have soil rich in sandstone and benefit from their proximity to the Mediterranean, which bestows cooling breezes on the vines so that they can bear fruit that perfectly balances ripeness and acidity. In order to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir-driven characters in their finished wines, the family has converted to organic farming. They became certified organic in 2020 and are currently employing biodynamic practices as well.

Today's wine is a blend of 40% syrah, 40% mourvèdre, and 20% grenache sourced from 25-year-old vines grown in sandstone soil as well as rolled pebbles from the Durance River. Medium-to-full-bodied, it is resplendent on the nose and palate with cassis and black raspberries laced with baking spice, wet stone, and hints of violets. Check out the press!

90 points & "Top Rhône Value", Wine Spectator:

"Fresh, with an unadulterated beam of cassis and plum puree sailing through, framed on the finish by violet and chalky minerality." (2/28/21)
