PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
The name Fontanafredda is practically synonymous with Barolo. It began in 1858 after the unification of Italy, when the country’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, purchased this Langhe estate. Here he started producing wine from native varietals, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo, which later developed into a commercial business under the direction of the King’s son, Count Mirafiori. Fontanafredda released their first Nebbiolo labeled as Barolo with the 1878 vintage.*

The estate enjoyed incredible prosperity until just after the turn of the century, but the proceeding Phylloxera plague, the Great Depression and the World Wars took their toll on the business and the property was sold to Italy’s oldest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Decades later in 2008, visionary businessman and Piedmont native Oscar Farinetti purchased the estate and wineries, bringing new life into one of Italy’s most heralded properties.* Today, Farinetti is a champion of sustainability and is dedicated to the preservation of Piedmont winemaking tradition as well as increasing the region’s visibility and popularity in the international wine market.

Today’s wine is sourced from vineyards in all eleven communes of the Barolo zone. Soils range form clay and magnesium to chalk and limestone; this diversity results in a wine that deftly balances structure and depth with fragrant elegance.

Aged for 2 years in Slovanian oak casks, the wine is full and intense, with a nose of brambly cherry, flowers, sagebrush, and tar that follows through on the robust, well-structured, medium-to-full-bodied palate. Bright acidity gives the wine lift and freshness and brings it to a long finish.

93 points, James Suckling:
“Finely tuned on the nose, which suggests citrus, fresh herbs, rose stems and dried nutmeg. Medium-bodied on the palate, which is very subtle in its delivery of citrus and berries. Fine tannins. Drink from 2021.” (4/24/19)

90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
“Subtle aromas of camphor, forest floor, wild herbs and blue flower lift out of the glass. On the smooth, juicy palate, notes of clove, white pepper and nutmeg accent a core of ripe black cherry. It's already approachable, but will offer several years of pleasure.” (10/1/19)

90 points, Wine & Spirits Magazine:
“The 2015 is fresh and lively in the context of the warm vintage, with flavors of red cherry, pomegranate and orange peel framed by light, raspy tannins. With its medium weight, it’s ready to drink now and it’s well priced.” (12/19)
