PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
One would be hard-pressed to find a Cali zin made with more passion and precision than Morgan Twain-Peterson, MW, who was born in Sonoma and was exposed to wine at a very young age. His father had a side gig at the fledgling Ravenswood Winery, and he often tagged along with his parents when they visited local wineries on the weekends. A visit to Sangiacomo vineyards sealed his fate: a family member let him make a small lot of pinot noir, and the tradition continued for years. The resulting "Vino Bambino Pinot Noir" was made from 1986 through 2001 and was featured on the wine lists of some of the country's top restaurants. Not too shabby for a kid, huh?
Between college and graduate school and founding Bedrock Wine Company in 2007, Morgan worked at wineries all over the world, including Ravenswood in Sonoma, Hardy's in McLaren Vale, and Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux. Since then, he has made wines that have garnered numerous high ratings from the wine press, including a couple of 100-point scores from Robert Parker. He even managed to squeeze in enough time to study for and pass the Master of Wine exam, making him one of two California winemakers with this distinction.
Today's wine comes from fruit sourced from Bedrock Vineyard in Sonoma as well as other sites with gnarly, old vines that, in Morgan's opinion (he is totally right, BTW) produce the most intensely ripe grapes and the BEST zinfandels. Crafted from 85% zinfandel with the balance a blend of carignan, mataro, grenache, and alicante bouschet, it is ready to go as soon as you pop the cork. Full-bodied and smooth, it has aromas and flavors of blackberries and black raspberries entwined with notes of baking spices, licorice, and tobacco. Firm yet plaint tannins give the wine structure without detracting from its silky mouthfeel.
