Cat Silirie Curates: The Trio Series is back with a selection of wines that pay tribute to the highest echelons of American winemaking, "American Beauty". The people behind these wines espouse values that we wine lovers hold dear. They possess intimate knowledge and reverence for the terroirs that bring forth their spectacular wines. They see themselves as farmers first and winemakers second, believing that they are stewards of the land who guide rather than dominate the winemaking process. Indeed, they let the terroir do the talking in their finished wines and this fact is evident in each wine Cat has selected for this enchanting trio.
Your “Cat Pack” will include the following wines:
2019 Drew Family Cellars Pinot Noir Mid-Elevation Mendocino Ridge, CA
2018 Nicolas-Jay, Chardonnay Affinités Willamette Valley, OR
2019 Merry Edwards Winery Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma, CA
Jason and Molly Drew have a true pioneering spirit. They started Drew Family Wines in 2000 with a clear focus on small-lot, cool-climate wines. By 2005 they were building their home and winery in the far western reaches of Mendocino, beyond what was once considered the most marginal terroir for grape-growing. Taking this massive risk and following their vision is paying off year after year, as their wines make a new chapter in quality, depth, and balance for American Pinot. Jason and Molly possess incredibly special, intangible qualities and character that make their family and their wines capable of stretching the possibilities in the vanguard of American wines.*
Nicolas-Jay is the story of a three-decade friendship between famed Burgundian winemaker Jean-Nicolas Meo and visionary music entrepreneur Jay Boberg. Jean-Nicolas Meo’s path to Oregon’s Willamette Valley first went through the great grand crus of Burgundy, where he spent nearly 30 years making wines from legendary vineyards like Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Corton Clos Rognet, and Echezeaux, as well as his own family vineyard, Domaine Meo-Camuzet.* In 2012 their winery was born. It is here that they employ Old World winemaking sensibilities in expressing the unique terroir of the Willamette Valley.
Merry Edwards was an aspiring nutritionist when she met a graduate student in the enology program at UC Davis and the trajectory of her career was turned upside down. Immediately enamored with wine and the process by which it was made, she altered her course load and graduated with a master's degree in food science with an emphasis in enology. One of only three women to study enology at the university at the time and the only one to become a winemaker, she blazed a trail for the next generation of females in the field. She established her winery in Sonoma's Russian River Valley because she believed the terroir would bring forth expressive, fruit-forward wines that were unique expressions of classic French varietals. Case in point: her unique sauvignon blanc. Crafted from the Musqué and Shenandoah clones, fermented in barrels, and aged sur-lie, this compelling wine displays a richness and confluence of flavor characteristics that have made it one of the most sought-after wines in the world.
