The abundant sunshine, cool breezes, and well-drained shale and granite soils of Stellenbosch comprise a terroir that brings forth robust, layered and age-worthy Bordeaux blends - and Morgenster is at the top of its Bordeaux game. Morgenster, with the help of consulting winemaker, Cheval Blanc director Pierre Lurton, has mastered the art of crafting layered, complex Bordeaux blends that have the cajones for extended aging (thank you, Stellenbosch terroir). Today's offer, with nine years under its belt, is drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve gracefully for many years. Check out the press!
90 points, Stephen Tanzer/Vinous:
"Saturated ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, licorice, clove, anise, minerals, and herbs. Juicy, suave and pliant on the palate, with nicely delineated berry and licorice flavors complicated by herbs and spices. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. Cheval Blanc director Pierre Lurton is consulting winemaker here, which may help to explain this wine's inner-mouth energy." (14.6% alcohol; 50% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot; 30% new oak )
