Joe Wagner of Belle Glos Meiomi fame is somewhat of a legend in on the California wine scene and the man behind today's offer. He has generations of winemaking in his blood; Joe's dad Chuck and his grandfather Charlie are the folks who helped put Napa Valley on the map with their own property, Caymus Vineyards. After working with his family through his teens and early twenties, Joe set off on his own to found Meiomi Belle Glos, where his work with Pinot Noir is the stuff of legend. His success with Meiomi inspired him to set his sights on the cooler climate AVAs of northern California, and Steorra was born.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for Steorra are harvested a bit early in order to maintain high acidity levels. Primary and secondary fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks; the wine is aged on the lees for a period of time to develop complexity and creamy texture. Moderate use of oak allows the wine's fruit characters to take center stage on the palate, but there is enough time in barrel to fuse the toasty and sweet spice elements of French oak with the fruit and creamy texture of the base wine.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Joe Wagner's latest offering is this dry brut, made from 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir. Touched by lemon and grapefruit, it starts with a nuance of flowers before launching into satisfying creaminess that lingers pleasantly on the palate." (12/31/16)
