PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Jean-Marc Burgaud’s history in winemaking is not very long, but he has quickly made his mark in Burgundy as a seriously talented craftsman. Based in the village of Morgon, where he purchased his aunt’s 12th century estate and converted it to a winery, he is a meticulous farmer who espouses the philosophy that great wines are made in the vineyards and lavishes ample attention on his 19 hectares of hillside vines planted in granitic/schistose soils. His wines are made the traditional way, with carbonic maceration (whole berry fermentation in an oxygen-free environment) and aging in a combination of tanks and barrels.
Today’s wine is a monovarietal (100% Gamay) sourced from a granite-heavy area called Charmes in the western part of the Morgon Cru, from vines that average 60 years in age. The juice undergoes carbonic maceration for a period of 7-10 days, which brings forth soft, plush fruit characters. Medium-bodied and velvety-smooth, it is redolent with aromas and flavors of blueberries and black raspberries. On the palate, the generous fruit characters are accented by subtle hints of brambly herbs and brightened by vibrant acidity.
