PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Le Piane Boca Rosso "Maggiorina" is a fresh young wine made with a traditional field blend of grapes and is released after one year of aging. Le Piane makes several types of Nebbiolo wines in the appellation of Boca located in Italy's Piedmont. Boca is considered to be the birthplace of Nebbiolo and Le Piane is the realization of  a dream held by Christoph Kuenzli, a Swiss wine merchant. By the early 1990s when he first visited Boca, the appellation’s vineyards covered only a mere 25 acres, down from almost 10,000 in the late 1800s. Because phylloxera and depopulation had taken its toll, Boca was in danger of disappearing!
The Boca DOC in the Piemonte is one of the smallest and Northernmost wine appellations of Italy. Producing Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Uva Rara, it is one of the most unique terroirs in the world. Boca had many forgotten vineyards and current owner Christoph Kuenzli became very enthusiastic about the region and it’s excellent potential in the early 1990's, and he became acquainted with Antonio Cerri, one of the last winegrowers to produce the typical and outstanding Boca wine. In view of his advanced age, more than 80 years old, Antonio Cerri handed over to Mr. Kuenzli his small vineyard (0.5 hectares), and his wine cellar containing all his old vintages. Hence Le Piane was (re)born and the small estate began step-by-step to acquire further small plots of land, like a jigsaw and the property developed to become a whole. The best areas of Boca – 4 vineyards with about 1.5 hectares (4 acres) each – were cleared and replanted with Nebbiolo and Vespolina vines. “Le Piane” now has an area of 8 hectares (20 acres) of vineyards, 2 (5 acres) of them with old vines.

With passion and hard work they transformed Le Piane into one of Italy’s most revered estates.

Following their success, Boca now boasts ten producers and 75 acres under vine.
The vines are worked organically, but Christoph has not sought certification. The vineyards lie between 400 and 500 meters, south-facing with a warm micro-climate protected from Alpine winds by the surrounding hills. The soil is unique in Italy: a porphyritic fine gravel, the remnants of a super-volcano.
