Salice Salentino is a DOC established in 1976 and located on the Salento peninsula in southern Italy's Puglia region. Quite literally "the heel of the boot", this peninsula has all the building blocks that bring forth great wines: proximity to the ocean and its moderating breezes, hot, dry summers, wide day-to-night temperature variations, and clay-limestone soils.
The Cantele estate is a third-generation family-owned and -run winery founded by the current generation's grandparents, immigrants from the north who settled in Puglia after WWII. The Cantele family is known for its pioneering work with and passion for native varietals. Today's offer is a monovarietal crafted from negroamaro, Puglia's flagship red grape known for its intense color and rich berry flavors. The 2018 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva is stainless-steel fermented and aged in seasoned oak barrels for 6 months. Medium-to-full-bodied, it has aromas and flavors of red and black fruits layered with baking spices, underbrush, tea, tobacco, and the merest hint of red flowers. These characters are transported by fresh acidity and pliant tannins to create a silky smooth mouthfeel.
