Today's offer is a collaborative effort between Mark Vlossak, founder of St. Innocent Winery, and Tim and Karen Ramey, owners of the Zenith Vineyard. Since 2006, Vlossak has been making a Pinot Noir cuvée under his label from the Rameys' famed vineyard site and had a financial interest in a winemaking facility on the property. A 30-year veteran of the business, Vlossak recently decided he wanted to scale back his winemaking efforts. To that end, he sold his interest in the winery and has plans to reduce his annual production by almost half. Word on the street is that 2016 is the FINAL VINTAGE of this wine.
St. Innocent produces small-lot, handmade wines in the Old World tradition – in other words, wines intended to go with food (pro tip: this plush beauty is da bomb all by itself too). The estate vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills is planted to 16 acres of Pinot Noir. The winery has also worked closely with eight different growers, leasing specific blocks of vineyards to produce terroir-specific wines.*
Zenith Vineyard is located 9 miles northwest of Salem, set on old sedimentary soils in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. It has a terroir ideal for the cultivation of complex, layered, and elegant Pinots. Dark ruby in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Zenith Vineyard has concentrated aromas of wild berries, black cherry, and woodland spices with allspice and nutmeg. Loaded with fruit, the mouth reveals berry and cherry fruit, cinnamon, cloves, and dark floral notes. The layered flavors persist long into the finish with well-integrated fresh acidity. It is quite a mouthful on its own and would be great with poultry, leg of lamb, or a juicy cheeseburger. Drink anytime, it will be lovely for at least 15 years.* Check out the press!
93 points, Vinous:
"Deep, bright-hued red. Spice-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by hints of woodsmoke, baking spices, and pungent flowers. Densely packed and energetic on the palate, offering cherry, red berry, and candied rose flavors that become sweeter as the wine opens up. Lingers with strong persistence and sneaky tannins, leaving behind sappy red fruit preserve and floral notes." (6/19)
93 points, James Suckling:
"This has attractive aromas and flavors of fresh red cherries with very well defined style in every regard. The oak is subtly played and delivers a swirling, spicy thread. The tannins are smooth and fine and there’s a superb sense of freshness driving the finish. Drink or hold." (1/30/20)
92 points, Wine Spectator:
"Polished and multilayered, with expressive raspberry, rose petal and spiced tea flavors that gather richness toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2028. 968 cases made." (5/31/20)
