PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
The "Pinha" is part of a company called Winemagnum, a labor of love established in 2011 by Portugal natives and veteran winemakers Carlos Lucas and Carlos Rodrigues. Both men have been making wine since the 1990s, Lucas in the Dão and Rodrigues in Bairrada. Looking to expand their lineup of cuvées, they joined forces; together, they purchased and revitalized vineyards in their respective appellations and acquired property in Alentejo as well. The Quinta do Ribeiro Santo winery and vineyards in the Dão makes some of the crown jewels of their portfolio.
The 2019 Carlos Lucas Vinhos "Pinha" Ribeiro Santo Tinto is sourced from vineyards situated 1300 to 1900 feet above sea level, with granitic, rocky soil. Summers here are hot and dry, with wide diurnal temperature variations thanks to the cooling influences of the Dão and Mondego Rivers. These are the building blocks of great wines - and it shows here.
Medium-to-full-bodied, the "Pinha", a blend of touriga nacional, alfrocheiro, and tinta roriz, is fermented and aged in stainless steel instead of oak in order to showcase its ebullient fruit characters. It is redolent with aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries and blueberries. On the palate, the fruits are laced with hints of wet stone and baking spices. The tannins are pliant, and bright acidity keeps it all fresh and lively. Check out the press!
