The La Bastide Saint Dominique estate lies in the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley, right at the foothills of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The property enjoys an optimal terroir for the production of Grenache/Syrah-based wines, thanks to the unique Mistral winds which blow throughout the winter and very hot and dry Summers. Built around a former 16th-century chapel, the estate was created by Marie-Claude and Gérard Bonnet with only a handful of hectares. Since establishing the Domaine in 1976, the Bonnets have, alongside their son Eric, expanded the estate to a total area of 50 hectares.
The 2017 La Bastide Saint Dominique Côtes du Rhône Rouge has been crafted from fruit sourced from 5 hectares of south-facing vineyards, with vines ranging in age from 25 to 50 years. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, the grapes were completely destemmed prior to pressing and primary fermentation. The wine was then aged for 18-24 months in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks before bottling.
Noted Rhone Valley wine writer Jeb Dunnuck rated the 2017 vintage in the Southern Rhone Valley 96 points. Here is what he has had to say:
"As I predicted last year, 2017 has turned out to be a brilliant vintage... Looking at the wines, this is a classic vintage for the region, and the wines ooze Provençal charm and sunny characters with their spicy, peppery, garrigue-laced aromas and flavors. The wines lean more toward the red-fruited end of the spectrum and have put on mid-palate weight and depth." JD
Check out the tasting notes:
"Deep garnet/purple in color, the 2017 La Bastide St Dominique Côtes du Rhône offers aromas of crisp red fruits, black currants, raspberries, with notes of cedar after it has been given some time to breathe in the glass. The palate presents loads of upfront dark berry fruits that are nicely supported by fine, ripe tannins and a hint of garrigue on the finish. This is a clean, well balanced, medium-bodied red wine that is sure to please from start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyable today, it has plenty of stuffing and will continue to develop gracefully for 3-5 more years."
