Borgo Maragliano is a family-owned winery with a history that dates back to 1850, when Giovanni Galliano purchased a plot of land in the municipality of Loazzolo and planted vines. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that the family expanded its holdings and set sights on crafting world-class wines, when Giovanni’s great-grandson Carlo studied enology in Alba and fell in love with the native Moscato grape. Today, the Gallianos have vineyards in Loazzolo, Bubbio, Bistagno and Canelli planted to Moscato as well as Brachetto, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.
The “La Caliera” is sourced from the vineyard after which it was named. The vines reside 1200 feet above sea level, have a south-west exposure and are planted in soil composed of tufaceous rock and sandstone. This is high-altitude Moscato that deftly balances ripe fruit characters with vibrant acidity. It offers aromas and flavors of peaches, apricots, gooseberries, and acacia flowers. On the palate, the generous fruit is layered with notes of wet stone and a hint of baking spice. It is a perfect wine to pair with fruit-based desserts, and it is a fabulous dessert all by itself.
