PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Château Larrivaux is a 16th-century estate run by the women of the Carlsberg family. Armelle Carlsberg, Sabine Carlsberg, and Bérangère Tesseron are the current caretakers. They take a non-interventionist approach to their craft, knowing that the terroir is the ultimate determinant of a wine's character. Located near Saint-Estèphe in the Haut-Médoc's commune of Cissac-Médoc, the property consists of 3 vineyards covering 19 hectares.

Two vineyards have gravelly topsoils covering deep layers of clay; the third consists of clay-limestone soil. These characteristics enable the vineyards to conserve water during the rainy season and to restore it to the roots during the dry season, which strongly limits the phenomenon of water stress (winery notes). While it is atypical of the Médoc, the clay-dominant soil dictates that the majority of the property is planted to Merlot (59%). The remainder is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (28%), Cabernet Franc (8%), and Petit Verdot (5%).

2012 was a very good vintage in the Médoc (92 points RP, 90 points WE), and it shows in today's wine. A blend of 58% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and 8% Cabernet Franc, it is bold and fleshy, with flavors of cherry and blackcurrant accented by notes of vanilla, cedar, and herbs. It is silky on the mid-palate, with firm yet pliant tannins and a long, graceful finish.

90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This ripe, fruity wine is developing a fine balance between fruit and structure. Its black currant flavors are bright, juicy and crisp, sustained by a core of dryness and delicious acidity. It will benefit from another year of age, so wait until late 2018 before drinking." (12/31/17)

91-92 points, James Suckling:
"Very good drive to this wine with tar and currant character and a citrus undertone. Medium-bodied. Chewy finish." (4/11/19)
