PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The Mâconnais has a centuries-old winemaking history but has only recently begun to come into its own as a source of high-quality wines, despite a terroir that is similar to that of its more prestigious neighbor to the north. Marl, limestone, granite, and schist make up much of the soil in the Mâconnais. Pouilly-Fuissé is particularly well-suited to the cultivation of this noble grape, with its predominantly limestone soil. The terroir is the building block for transcendent chardonnays - and it shows in today's offer.
Domaine La Soufrandise is a 6-hectare, family-owned estate with a history that dates back to 1831. Its strength lies partially in its size; current owners Nicholas and Françoise Melin have time to lavish plenty of attention on their vines as well as the process of transforming their fruit into wine. Also, with the average age of their vines being 45 years old, their wines display a layered complexity coupled with a generous fruit profile.
Today's wine is lees-aged and spends 10 months in tanks followed by an additional 10 months in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels. This approach gives the wine richness while still maintaining its terroir-driven characters and vibrant acidity. Pure, classic Burgundian chardonnay, it has floral aromas and flavors of tropical and citrus fruits layered with notes of almonds and honey that deepen with a bit of bottle aging. The style is classic and distinct.
