PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Some wines are meant to be enjoyed in their youth. Some benefit greatly from aging but can be savored while young with a thorough decanting. Then there are wines that absolutely, positively should not be opened until they have spent years in the bottle. These wines have the ability to become absolute rock stars, with layered secondary and tertiary flavors that cannot be achieved by decanting their youthful incarnations.

Some producers ensure that you will get to experience their wines at their peak. They achieve this end by holding back some bottles of a particular wine made in a particular vintage and release them at a later date. Known as library releases, these wines give you a chance to savor juice that has developed all the layered complexity that can only happen by spending years in the bottle. No cellar? No problem.

Such is the case with today's magnificent Three-Pack Feature, the 2007 Il Moro di San Giovanni Super Tuscan IGT. The Il Moro was drinkable early on with abundant exposure to air but it would not have come close to realizing its full potential. With 14 years currently under its belt, it is drinking spectacularly well now and will continue to do so over the next 5-7 years!

Daniela Pavese purchased the Il Moro estate, located between Montalcino and Siena, in 2000. She revitalized the land, planted 5 hectares to Bordeaux varietals, and released her first vintage in 2003.

Super Tuscans are Daniela's specialty and, working with some of the finest consulting enologists (Andrea Franchetti of Tenuta di Trinoro, for example) in Italy, she crafts wines that rival those coming from her more well-known peers. She has earned some serious street cred, and it shows with today's wine, a blend of 40% cabernet franc, 40% cabernet sauvignon, and 20% petit verdot aged in French oak for 12 months. 92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

"The 2007 Toscana Rosso Moro di San Giovanni is a gorgeous wine loaded with explosive dark red fruit, minerals, flowers, and spices..... the Moro di San Giovanni flows through to the finish with superb length and fine overall balance."  Antonio Galloni (10/2/10)

The 2007 Toscana Rosso Moro di San Giovanni was indeed built for long-term aging and it has hit its stride, with rich dark fruits that are beautifully integrated with notes of espresso and cocoa yet still retain their youthful exuberance.
