Morellino di Scansano is located in the Maremma region, on the southern tip of Tuscany and on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Maremma benefits from volcanic soil and hot, dry daytime weather that brings forth richer expressions of the Sangiovese varietal than its more well-known neighbors to the north. The heat is balanced out by sea breezes that elicit significant swings in day-to-night temperatures. This variation enables grapes to develop an ideal balance between ripe fruit characters and acidity. And that volcanic soil? It makes it mark on the wines, providing the ideal complementary flavors to the native Sangiovese grape.
This beautiful terroir is what attracted siblings Federico, Balbino and Francesca Romana Terenzi to the region when they were searching for a site for their winery. Knowing that they would be merely custodians of the land who would guide rather than dominate the winemaking process, they fully realized that location would be the main factor determining the quality of their wines. Today’s offer is a stellar testament to their foresight and good judgment!
The 2014 Terenzi Madrechiesa is a mono-varietal sourced entirely from the family’s Madre Chiesa Vineyard. Stainless-steel fermented and aged in large oak barrels for 12 months, it is indeed a plush and generous expression of Sangiovese, resplendent with black cherry and red raspberry characters on the nose and palate, with accents of savory herbs and balancing acidity.
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
“Made entirely with Sangiovese, this presents enticing aromas of blueberry, eucalyptus and underbrush. The vibrant savory palate offers black cherry, cinnamon and green peppercorn alongside fine-grained tannins.” (5/1/18)
90 points, Wine Spectator:
“This is elegant and cherry-laden, with notes of wild herbs, tar and earth. Dense, leaving a swath of tannins coating the gums. Balanced and long overall. Drink now. 2,100 cases made, 256 cases imported.” (10/15/18)
