Mendoza's Luján de Cuyo region is located just east of the Andes Mountains, south of Mendoza City and north of the Uco Valley. Its high altitude and proximity to the mountains give it a terroir that brings forth incredible wines. The weather is hot and dry, the grapes receive excellent sun exposure and benefit from wide diurnal temperature variations that preserve ripe fruit flavors and balancing acidity. The alluvial and clay soils lend a compelling layer of complexity to the finished wines as well.
The Corte B is a blend of 81% Malbec, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Bonarda from the Vistalba sub-region of Luján de Cuyo. The Malbec and Bonarda are sourced from vines over 70 years old, while the Cabernet grapes come from vines planted 20 years ago. The vines are farmed sustainably, without the use of herbicides and pesticides. Fermented in concrete vats, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak (40% new). It is expansive and generous, with aromas of cassis and blackberries that follow through on the velvety palate. Supporting flavors of mocha, tobacco, vanilla, cedar, and wet stone unfold layer by layer.
94 points, Tim Akin:
"Combining Malbec with 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and (unusually for a top red) 8% Bonarda, this is a supple red berry and bramble style with floral top notes, fine tannins, well-integrated oak and an undertone of chalky minerality. Very complete. Drink 2018-25."
93 points, James Suckling:
"Tight and focused with chewy yet polished tannins and a lovely texture. Shows tension and intensity. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish. Drink now or hold. (6/2017)
91 points, Vinous:
"Good dark ruby-red. Blackcurrant, high-toned spices, licorice, and mint on the nose, plus a floral note that reminded me of Cabernet Franc. A supple, concentrated, wonderfully pliant blend with a spicy personality to its blackberry, licorice and menthol flavors. Finishes chewy, savory and very long, with sweet tannins. This wine boasts excellent palate presence." (7/2017)
