After 30 years as winemaker for world-renowned Vega Sicilia, Mariano Garcia Fernández founded Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos in 1999. His reputation for outstanding craftsmanship is built on old-vine selection Tinto Fino (Ribera del Duero's name for Tempranillo), diversity of terroir, and decades of experience in viticulture and winemaking. Today, Aalto controls and farms 130 hectares of vines scattered among more than 200 separate plots all situated in the provinces of Valladolid and Burgos. Twenty hectares are young plants propagated from old vines, while the remaining 110 hectares have vines that range from 40 to 100 years old. The soils where Aalto’s vineyards are situated include pale clay-limestone, ferrous clay, sand, sandstone, rocky glacial, loam, and alluvial. This diversity provides complexity married to power, and structure blended with a purity of fruit – the exact characteristics which have earned Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos praise from around the world as the leading proponent of modern style Ribera del Duero reds. (from importer notes)
Today's wine is made from 100% Tinto Fino sourced from Aalto's various holdings; vines are between 15 and 80 years old. Fermented in a combination of stainless steel, concrete, and oak vats followed by 18 months of aging a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak, it is an expansive, powerful wine that showcases the depth and power of Tinto Fino as well as its elegance. It is loaded with black fruit characters entwined with accents of vanilla, toast, baking spices, licorice, tobacco, and coffee that gradually unfold on the palate. It is robust and well-structured, yet has a velvety mouthfeel and finishes long. This wine is drinking very well now but will develop beautifully in the cellar.

93-95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"When I tasted it, the 2016 Aalto had already been blended and taken out of the barrels, waiting to be bottled in a couple of weeks. It's still young and tender, with peachy aromas, a little creamy and with a soft palate where the tannins are fine-grained. In 2016, they used more vineyards, grapes from their own plots and others purchased from suppliers. They expect to fill some 280,000 bottles in late June 2018. 2016 was a higher-yielding year that provided fresh and balanced wines. It should age nicely." (8/31/18)
