For any of you who have been following our e-mail offers for some time, you already know that Capanna has been one of our favorite producers from Montalcino going all the way back to 2008. No other winery from this tiny zone in Tuscany consistently produces great wine at such reasonable prices - seriously, the price-to-quality ration is outta sight!
Located north of Montalcino in Montosoli, Capanna was bought by the Cencioni family in 1957. The Montosoli area, has long been considered one of the best "crus" of Brunello. The farm is administered exclusively by the family, operating according to tradition but also taking into consideration modern technology that can help raise the quality of the product.
An area of about 12 hectares is cultivated to vines. The vineyards are planted on a south-southeast facing slope on Galestro, a schist based soil which encourages slow and even ripening of the fruit. Its magnificent position and the stony soil, together with the dry and airy climate, allows Capanna to form a Brunello wine that is graceful and elegant, suitable for a long maturing process.
No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used and every effort is made to farm naturally. Picked by hand, the grapes are immediately de-stemmed and fermented on their skins for 20-22 days in temperature controlled Slovenian oak vats. The wine matures in large Slovenian oak uprights to allow maturation without the intrusion of wood flavors or tannins. In summary, Capanna crafts modern wines that emphasize the fruit-forward components of the Sangiovese Grosso grape while allowing full expression of the rich terroir upon which the grapes are grown.
International Wine Report: Rated 93 Points
"The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino is a total success story from Capanna, who produced an outstanding wine in this vintage. It immediately grabs your attention with its pretty aromas of cherries and dried red berries which are woven together with spices, smoke, dried herbs and dried flowers that coming together seamlessly the glass. On the palate this medium-bodied red is refined, silky and beautifully balanced, with lovey underlying acidity as it heads into the long, sleek finish. While this is showing fantastic already and should go on to offer a decade long drinking window for those willing to wait. Simply put, this is an absolutely brilliant wine from Capanna, especially considering the difficulties faced during the growing season." March 2019

"Bright dark red. Slightly musky nose offers scents of sour red cherry, clove, dried herbs, violet, and rust. Clean, fresh and floral in the mouth, with an attractive young rather lightweight mouthfeel in a classic northern Montalcino hill style, with silky but youthfully tight flavors of red cherry, cranberry and wintergreen. Finishes persistent and firm but with very fine-grained tannins. Not a blockbuster but showcasing lovely balance and precision, you can lay this one down for a few years." March 2019
