PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
For 142 years, four generations of the López de Heredia family have devoted themselves to producing exceptional and unique wines. They are masterpieces which the founder of the company, Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, defined in the late nineteenth century as "Supreme Rioja". Vineyard care, scrupulous selection of grapes, extended aging in oak barrels and in bottles all contribute to making these illustrious wines with their exceptional bouquet.*

Lopéz de Heredia and its vineyards are located in Rioja Alta; the Tondonia vineyard sits just outside the town of Haro in a shell-like depression next to the River Ebro, which serves as a border with Rioja Alavesa. The soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone. The vineyard covers a total area of 170 hectares and produces an average annual yield of some 800,000 kg of grapes, the best of which are used in the making of reserve wines. In exceptional years, the very best fruit is made into grand reserve wines.*

The 2008 Lopéz de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is crafted from 75% Tempranillo,  15% Garnacha, and 10% Mazuelo. Aged for six years in barrels, it is fined with egg whites but unfiltered. 220,000 bottles were made.

95 points, James Suckling:
"Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate, and toasted oak. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins, and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always." (11/2020)

95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh, and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice, and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There's more definition and precision here."  (10/2020)

94 points, Vinous:
"Dark, bright-rimmed garnet. An expressive bouquet displays red and black currant, dried cherry, cigar box, vanilla, rose oil, and cured tobacco scents plus a baking spice top note. Appealingly sweet and energetic red and dark berry, floral pastille, and chewing tobacco flavors show tight focus and spicy cut. Candied rose and vanilla notes linger on the long, lively finish, which is framed by smooth, well-judged tannins." (4/2021)
