PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Michele Chiarlo established his estate in 1956 - pretty young by Piedmont's standards, but by no means is this indicative of the quality of his wines. Chiarlo's unwavering pursuit of excellence and his reverence for the terroir of Piedmont have earned him a reputation as one of the most prolific winemakers in northern Italy. His artisanally made wines are considered to be among the very best.

Today's offer is a monovarietal (100% Nebbiolo) sourced from southwest-facing hillside vineyards in the Langhe. Temperature-controlled fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation and over two years of aging in French Allier and Slavonian oak barrels. The finished wine has "pure, high-toned red berry aromas and flavors with green peppercorn, spice, and almond notes that surround a core of vivid acidity and moderate tannins. It is similar in character to Barolo, but more delicate and has great aging potential." (winery notes)

94 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This opens with earthy aromas of leather, forest floor, game, and balsamic notes of camphor. The elegant, taut palate evokes dried cherry, cranberry, fennel, and tobacco alongside tightly knit tannins and vibrant acidity. Give it time to fully develop. Drink 2024–2036." (9/1/19)

93 points, James Suckling:
"A ripe and fruity red with plum and berry aromas and flavors. Lots of citrus rind and cherries. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink from 2022." (6/5/20)

92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2016 Barbaresco Reyna represents a blend of fruit from various vineyard sites. The Michele Chiarlo estate owns seven hectares of Nebbiolo in Barbaresco, and this wine is conceived as an expression of a grape, rather than any one particular vineyard site. In fact, the wine is classic Barbaresco, with fine fruit flavors followed by slightly more accessible or silky tannin (when compared to Barolo), making it a great pairing with grilled sirloin." (6/28/19)

92 points, Wine Spectator:
"Menthol and eucalyptus aromas and flavors mark this intense red, picking up cherry, plum, and sweet spice notes as this builds to a lingering finish. Dusty tannins and a cocoa accent line the aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. 2,000 cases made, 500 cases imported." (2/29/20)
