PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Rioja native Sandra Bravo studied enology and engineering and was drawn back to her homeland out of a desire to make pure, honest wines emphasizing freshness and terroir. After cutting her teeth at wineries in Bordeaux, Tuscany, New Zealand, California, and Priorat, she established her winery in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño in Rioja Alavesa and revitalized some of the old vines in the area. She believed that the appellation's high elevation, calcareous soil, Mediterranean herbs, and mountain winds, in addition to eschewing new oak in favor of neutral barrels and amphorae, would bring forth the ethereal wines of her dreams. Today's offer is the transcendent result of her vision and efforts.

The 2019 "La Dula" is made from 100% Garnacha sourced from Bravo's 70-year-old, organically farmed vines in the Rivas de Tereso zone, 700 meters above sea level, in limestone-abundant soil. Fermented in old foudres and aged in clay amphorae, it has aromas and flavors of strawberries and raspberries infused with those Mediterranean herbs and wet stone. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and threaded with bright acidity that keeps those red fruits fresh and lively. A whiff of black pepper appears on the long finish.

Master of Wine Tim Atkin gave this wine 97 points:
"This is the second vintage of a wine that was the red discovery of the year in my 2020 report and it's even better than the first release, taking its place among the best Garnachas in Rioja. The vines are planted at 700 meters and have produced something with intensity, grace, purity, and palate length. Truly the Pinot Noir of the south." (2021 Rioja Report, 2/21)
