PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Wayne and Virginia Snowden became enamored with the Napa Valley - and its wines - after spending their summer vacations there in the early 1950s. They purchased property in the hills on the east side of the Silverado Trail between St. Helena and Rutherford in 1955, planted six acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, and their family winery was born.

Sons Scott and Randy took over in the late 1970s, expanded their vineyard holdings to 23 acres, and started selling their stellar fruit to Stag’s Leap Vineyards. Their reputation enabled them to expand their customer base, and by the late 1980s they were also contributing to the wines of Silver Oak Wine Cellars, Frank Family Vineyard, David Ramey, Viader, and Caymus Vineyards. By the early 1990s the brothers knew their fruit was just too good to give away and they began to hold back some of their harvest for themselves. It was a wise decision and a good one for those who love the wines of the Napa Valley. Today, the the bulk of their grapes is used for their own cuvées, which have garnered numerous accolades form the press and do not command the astronomical prices of wines from neighboring estates.

Today’s wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Snowden’s Pool Block and Lost Orchard Vineyards as well as a small portion of Merlot from their Lost Vineyard. These sites all boast elevations of between 600 and 800 feet above sea level and sandy, volcanic soil - the building blocks of powerful, terroir-driven wines. Hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts and aged for 17 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels, the finished wine is a gorgeous and authentic tribute to the Napa Valley.

91 points, Wine Spectator:
“This is nicely packed, showing polished cassis and plum reduction notes layered with smoldering tobacco accents and a hint of alder. A touch toothy through the finish as the toast hangs on, but the fruit core is plenty solid, and that should win out with some cellaring. Best from 2021 through 2030.” (11/20)

90 points, Vinous:
“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch is an attractive, mid-weight wine that shows the more gracious, understated side of the year. Floral and spice notes give the 2017 lovely aromatics to play off a core of sweet red berry fruit. This is a very pretty wine. 2020-2030.” (1/20)
