Silvio Nardi was a wine lover and successful businessman in need of a hobby; he found it in the rolling hills of Montalcino, where he purchased the Casale del Bosco in 1950 with thoughts of starting a winery. What began as a side project became a successful business in its own right. Silvio bottled his first Brunello in 1958, purchased the Manachiara Estate in 1962, and the Bibbiano Estate in 1972. Today, his daughter Emilia has taken over the company and has ushered it into the modern age, combining tradition with scientific research and clonal selection.
The 2013 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello is a blend of the finest grapes from the Manachiara and Casale del Bosco Estates. The family follows the strict DOCG laws required of a classified Brunello di Montalcino. Yield is limited; only the top 70% of the grapes is used to make the wine. The fruit is carefully handpicked and sorted. Fermentation and maceration take at least 24 days at controlled temperatures of less than 86°F. The wine is aged for 12 months in new and used French oak barriques, followed by 18 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and an additional 12 months in bottles.*
94 points, James Suckling:
“This is a beautiful Brunello that delivers juicy and delicious fruit with cherries and hints of spices. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, chewy finish. Gorgeous length.” (9/11/18)
93 points, Wine Spectator:
“Enticing aromas and flavors of cherry, leather, iron and tobacco mark this structured red. Balanced and firm, with a long and tannic, yet fresh, finish.” (6/15/18)
93 Points, Vinous:
“Deep red. Enticing aromas of perfumed red cherry, sweet spices and aromatic woods. Clean, fresh and vibrant, featuring juicy red cherry and mineral flourishes on the long, juicy, bright finish. Outstanding classic Brunello that has the high acidity and lithe frame of the vintage but also more meat than most. Lovely wine and the best classic Brunello from Nardi in years.” (4/2018)
91 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
“Tenute Silvio Nardi's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a balanced and complete wine. It opens to pretty color saturation and a mid-weight style that is perhaps a touch darker and more concentrated compared to some of the estate's neighbors in this beautiful appellation. Dark fruit flavors of dark cherry and plum segue to spice, campfire ash, cola and wild rose. The wine sees a long oak-aging period, with 12 months in smaller tonneaux followed by 18 months in botti grandi. This elaborate process bodes well for the future longevity of the wine. In fact, I would definitely recommend putting this bottle aside for a few more years before popping the cork.” (2/28/18)
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
“Aromas suggesting red woodland berry, crushed herb, blue flower and a whiff of exotic spice float from the glass. The tightly wound linear palate is ethereal and still primary, offering sour cherry and licorice alongside austere close-grained tannins that grip the finish.” (5/1/18)
