How does a multi-generational, family-owned Napa Valley winery remain at the top of its game amidst hundreds of neighboring competitors? It reinvents itself, of course, but it does not do so in response to the latest industry trends. Rather, it focuses on what it loves the most and what it does best.
Such is the case with Hess Persson Estates, formerly known as Hess Collection. The new name simultaneously honors its roots and its current caretakers, Sabrina and Timothy Persson. Its two distinct portfolios - the Hess Collection and the Lions Head Collection - embrace the family's devotion to the craftsmanship of top-notch Napa cabernet sauvignons. To this end, the family has acquired new vineyard holdings in the valley that reflect the depth and breadth of Napa Valley terroir. Their holdings as well as their passion and winemaking chops are exquisitely on display here.
Lion Tamer is named for the addition of malbec to the final blend. Malbec's plush fruit characters tame cabernet sauvignon's tannic beast; its addition results in a wine that deftly balances structure with fruit-driven, velvety texture. Indeed, the wine straddles the line between hedonism and elegance. "Supple tannins surround the palate, framing layers of juicy black cherry, dark plum, and hints of rich mocha, with well-integrated vanilla and oak notes delivering a lengthy, elegant finish." (Stephanie Pope, Winemaker)

92 points, Wine Spectator:
"Lush and fleshy, with cassis, boysenberry, and blackberry preserve notes guided by hints of alder and mesquite. Stays open but defined through the finish, with a buried hint of sweet tobacco. Drink now through 2027. 8,052 cases made." (6/31/21)
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This cabernet sauvignon is effusively bright in dense layers of fruit. A moderate grip of tannin helps to give it additional power and length around a juicy mid-palate of blueberry and vanilla." (5/1/21)
