The "Backbone" hails from Walker Bay, part of the stunning South African peninsula known as The Cape of Good Hope. The region has become known as "the graveyard of ships" because its treacherous coastline has destroyed over 3000 ships, and their ruins, or backbones, remain on its shores. However, the name "Backbone" is also an homage to Benguela Cove's founder and proprietor Penny Streeter, who overcame seemingly unbeatable odds.
Penny Street is one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in South Africa and has been transforming Benguela Cove since 2013. At one time living in a homeless refuge with three children, Penny has since built a business empire which includes Benguela Cove through her sheer hard work and tenacity. Proudly boasting some of the most sought-after terroirs in the Western Cape overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Benguela Cove offers unique and beautiful wines that are brought to life by the cool, maritime winds that caress the vines and allow them to bear fruit that beautifully balances ripeness and acidity. Proudly carrying the stamp of wine of origin (WO) Walker Bay, all wines are crafted with minimal intervention by award-winning cellar master, Johann Fourie.*
Today's wine, a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Cinsault has aromas of melon, raspberries, strawberries, and pomegranates that follow on the palate, which also displays accents of lychee, pear, and a hint of wet stone. Vibrant acidity makes it a super thirst-slayer perfect for spring and summer sipping.
