Crous St. Martin was established in 1879, a year of historical significance in the upper part of the region where the winery is located. It marks the restoration of St. Martin’s Cross (“Crous” in local provincial language), which the monks had installed to indicate the road to Châteauneuf. St. Martin is considered the messenger of civic rights and sharing (winery website). The wine is named in honor of this important time.
2016 was an excellent vintage in the southern Rhône, receiving a 99-point rating from Wine Spectator: "This truly rare vintage is a new benchmark. The growing season was warm during the day but cool at night, with an unusually large diurnal swing that led to slow, even ripening across all varieties while maintaining acidity. Reds are laden with fruit, yet extremely racy and fresh in feel; whites are pure, brimming with energy."
Crafted from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that is hand-harvested and double-sorted to ensure that only the highest quality of grapes go into the finished wine, today's offer is classic, robust-yet-ethereal Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
93 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Crous St. Martin's 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape is 80% Grenache, with the balance split between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Aged in concrete and older barrels, it's full-bodied and creamy-ripe in texture, with notes of mixed cherries, cinnamon, and mocha. It's supple and smooth from start to finish, but it should have the stuffing to age for a decade."
