Established 12 years ago, Agly Brothers is a celebration of the winemakers' reverence for Rhône varietals. Their Syrah and Carignan vines are planted on north-facing Gneiss, while their Grenache is planted on south-facing slopes with Schist on a calcareous layer. Bio-dynamic rhythms are followed and only natural and organic composts are used. Each of the varietals is hand-harvested, entirely de-stemmed, and hand-sorted. Fermentations take place in small cement vats with a light punching of the caps. Maceration proceeds 3-4 weeks as determined by taste and the wines are racked to cask where they undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 16-20 months in previously used barrels (1 to 3 vintages in age) from various origins, always French oak and thicker staved barrels for the Grenache to limit oxidation.*
Today's wine is garnet red with a nose of concentrated black fruits, complex roasting notes, and aged leather. The wood component is discreet and the spices are well integrated. The silky palate is generous and has a powerful grace that complements the present and persistent tannins. The aromas of ripe fruits are beautifully balanced with the spice, leather and roasting notes. Proper bottle aging has been achieved prior to release.* Check out the press!
94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2014 Côtes du Roussillon Villages is a terrific 2014 that makes the most of the vintage. Checking in as a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache that was raised all in concrete tanks, it offers loads of underbrush and sous bois to go with ripe black raspberry and plum-like fruit, pepper, and violets. Full-bodied, elegant and perfectly balanced, this beautiful Roussillon will have 10-12 years or more of overall longevity. This collaboration between Michel Chapoutier and Jasper Hill owner/vintner Ron Laughton of Victoria, Australia, produces a single Côtes du Roussillon-Villages cuvée that's based largely on Syrah, with a solid dose of Grenache. Completely de-stemmed and aged all in concrete tank (and seasoned oak), this is a fabulous, naked expression of the terroir in the Agly Valley. (4/2015)
