Named after the ship that in 1827 charted and explored the Marlborough Coast, Astrolabe is a personal project for winemaker Simon Waghorn and his wife, Jane. Astrolabe wines express the purity and intensity of fruit flavors naturally afforded by the climate and soils of the Marlborough region. All grapes are sourced from unique Marlborough sites, carefully chosen to add complexity and completeness in the wines. Simon is fascinated by the distinctive qualities of the Marlborough sub-regions, whether bottled alone or blended as part of the Marlborough classic. All Simon’s skill and experience combine to capture the essence of Marlborough.

In 1996, when winemaker Simon and Jane decided to start their own winery, they chose the name Astrolabe because of its historic ties with Marlborough, along with the connotations of exploration and discovery.

Simon Waghorn has been honing his craft over four decades and has established a benchmark style that today ranks him among the great winemakers of his generation in New Zealand. What makes his efforts notable is his commitment to allowing each of his wines to reflect the sense of place inherent to each individual vineyard. Careful site selection, expert picking decisions, delicate fruit handling and astute blending are the hallmarks of his wines.

‘The Wrekin’ Vineyard lies within its own small valley located on the north facing slopes of the larger Fairhall Valley. It is part of a sub-region of Marlborough known as the Southern Valleys. Wrekin is one of the highest vineyards in the valley. Its ancient clay soils overlying greywacke parent rock are significantly different from the soils occurring in the lower areas. The elevation, rolling hillside and orientation of the vineyard blocks, which were established on undisturbed soils, also contribute to the unique terroir of this site.
The planting of Chenin Blanc here is on a steep hillside behind the farmhouse. The Wrekin’ is farmed organically and utilizes biodynamic practices.

Like its fellow Loire grape sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc flourishes in the distinctive climate of Marlborough. Though Sauvignon Blanc has stolen the headlines for some time now, for the handful of passionate Chenin Blanc winemakers in New Zealand, it can be a rewarding varietal that produces very serious, elegant and ageworthy wine.

The Astrolabe Wrekin Chenin Blanc is crafted from grapes which have been handpicked in order to preserve the the fruits natural delicacy and phenolics. This Chenin Blanc has been partially barrel fermented with wild yeast for complexity, with the remainder in stainless steel to preserve the fruit flavors. All fruit is free-run to retain purity. The finished wine is everything one could ask of a wine made from Chenin Blanc, with its distinctive flavor profile, crisp acidity, and the ability to age with interest and grace.

Let's check out some of the press:

Bob Campbell, Master of Wine: Rated 94 Points
“Fermented by indigenous yeasts in oak puncheons. Dry, crisply refreshing chenin blanc with green apple, lime-citrus and saline oyster-shell flavours supported by attractive, lively acidity. Good now but should age well. Drink 2020 to 2028.” JUL 2020

Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier: Rated 94 Points
”A very expressive bouquet with aromas of ripe apple and citrus pith, spring blossoms and pear, honeysuckle and minerality. Complexity builds as the wine begins to open up in glass. Tense, youthful, fresh and ripe fruited on the palate. Fruit flavours reflect the nose, acidity adds a layer of tension and freshness, crispness and length. A lovely wine with a dry finish. A lovely aperitif option and cellar worthy as well. Best from today and through 2028+.” SEP 20

Michael Cooper- New Zealand Wines Buyer's Guide 2020: Rated 4½ STARS
“The 2018 vintage was hand-harvested in the Southern Valleys and partly fermented with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak puncheons. A dry style, it is very ageworthy. Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, with strong, youthful, citrusy, slightly appley flavours, showing good intensity, and slightly biscuity notes adding complexity. Best drinking 2021+.”

This bottle of 2018 Astrolabe Wrekin Vineyard Chenin Blanc is a real treat. Upon pouring the wine into the glass you will immediately notice the wines brilliant pale gold hue and the suggestion of viscosity from the clearly defined legs to be found along the inside rim of your glass. The aromatics are clean and forward with engaging notes of spring flowers/honeysuckle, lemon curd, green apple and traces of vanilla. The wine is medium to full bodied, offering layered flavors of ripe peach, golden apple, and lemon. As is the case with many top quality examples of Chenin Blanc, this wine can be thoroughly enjoyed today, but will pick up wonderful depth and complexity if put down in the cellar.

We are certain that you will be thrilled with the Astrolabe Wrekin Chenin right out of the gate, yet we are equally certain that you will be amazed with where this wine will go when allowed to develop with time. This is a classic case of buy some for now and buy some for later as well.
