PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
A Davis, California native and son of a farmer/biochemist, Kosuge has farming in his blood and was drawn to winemaking. He cut his teeth at Saintsbury Winery in Carneros; there he developed a passion for Pinot Noir that bordered on obsession; this led him to to accept several consulting gigs at various Sonoma wineries. He loved how this most difficult of varietals could, under the right conditions of terroir, transform into beautiful wine, and has spent years painstakingly tending the vines under his care to that end. He strives to bring Old World, non-interventionist sensibility to winemaking, adapting traditional methods to modern, New World conditions. His relentless pursuit of the highest expression of Pinot Noir led him to open his own Pinot-centered winery, and the reward of creating something beautiful from difficult conditions has drawn him to the unyielding and rough topography of the Sonoma Coast. The 2018 B. Kosuge "Sonoma Coast" Pinot Noir demonstrates that he has mastered the challenge.

2018 was one of the easiest vintages in Byron Kosuge’s career, characterized by few heat spikes, normal winter rain, and forgiving weather throughout the growing season that led to a smooth harvest. While hotter years often lead to red wines of great concentration and color, cooler years typically yield less dense wines with fresher flavors and more pure aromas, and the latter is exactly what 2018 brought forth.*

Every spring Byron goes through every barrel to determine which wines he will bottle, and how much of each. From the Sonoma Coast he crafts three different wines: Hirsch Vineyard, The Habitat, and the Sonoma Coast blend. Before bottling, Byron takes into consideration two things: worthiness of vineyard designation and which combinations yield the best overall wines. In 2018, he set aside a couple of barrels of Hirsch to bottle separately, but the remaining barrels were better when they were blended. As is often the case, good juice when combined together yields a wine that is better than any of the component parts.*

Today’s wine offers cherry and spice aromatics and a medium-bodied, silky palate with red cherry taking center stage. Layers of brambly earth, savory herbs, wet stone, red raspberry and white pepper unfold on the core of vibrant acidity that brings the wine to a long and satisfying finish. This is elegant, gorgeous Pinot that showcases the beauty of the 2018 vintage.
