Located in the famous winery town of Haro, Muga's vineyards are planted to Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mazuelo (Carignan), Graciano, Malvasia, and Viura, on clay-limestone soils at elevations up to 480 meters above sea level.
Traditional Riojan viticulture that is completely sustainable and organic, although not certified. A blend of head trained and trellished vineyards of Rioja's most traditional white varieties.
Eight hour maceration in pneumatic press, followed by fermentation in mostly neutral barriques, puncheons, and demi-muids. The barrels used for Muga Blanco are all coopered from French oak trees that are selected by the winemakers yearly in February. The staves are seasoned for a minimum of three years, and up to five.
4 months sur lie in mostly second and third use barriques, puncheons, and demi-muids.
2019 Bodegas Muga Rioja Bianco
92 points, James Suckling: “A layered, fruity white with sliced cooked lemon and some apple. Hints of hot stones. It’s full-bodied and dense with plenty of fruit.” (9/22/20)
