Bodegas Muga was established in 1932, and in a relatively short time has been recognized as one of the very finest producers in Rioja. Located in the famous winery town of Haro, Muga's vineyards are planted to Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mazuelo (Carignan), Graciano, Malvasia, and Viura, on clay-limestone soils at elevations up to 480 meters above sea level.
The house style of Rosado here is quite traditional. Harvested grapes (Garnacha, Viura, and Tempranillo) undergo a selection process upon arrival at the cellar. The fruit is destined and macerated for 12 hours before a cool fermentation takes place in neutral wood tanks for 20-25 days. At the end of the primary fermentation, the wine is allowed to rest for two months on its lees prior to bottling.
92 points, James Suckling:
"A beautiful rosé as always with a pink salmon color. It opens with rose petals, pink guava, grapefruit, mandarins, and freshly squeezed nectarines. Medium-bodied and salty on the palate. Lithe and oily texture, but a sharp acid backbone." (7/3/19)
90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"A stony, fresh nose is clean as a whistle, while this feels medium to full, with a faint, skin-driven texture and citrus-laden acidity. Orange and nectarine flavors are bright and fairly deep, while it remains alert across a snappy finish." (12/1/19)
