PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Randall Grahm established Bonny Doon Winery in Santa Cruz in 1983 but his rise to stardom was somewhat circuitous. He had become enamored of Burgundian reds while working in a wine shop shortly after graduating from college and was determined to produce Old-World Pinot Noirs from his Central Coast property. He learned the hard way that his terroir was not meant for this cool-climate grape but he quickly re-adapted, realizing that the land was more suitable for Rhône varietals. He cemented his reputation as a pioneering "Rhône Ranger" in the Central Coast with his inaugural release of the 1984 "Le Cigare Volant", his homage to the majestic wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today, Bonny Doon Vineyard produces a stunning portfolio of award-winning cuvées inspired by the Rhône Valley.

The 2017 Bonny Doon Vineyard Cos du Gilroy Grenache is blended with 12% Mourvèdre and is sourced from four vineyard sites in the Monterey County AVA: Rancho Solo, Alta Loma, Ventana, and Del Barba. Grahm takes a non-interventionist approach to winemaking so as not to disrupt the interplay between grapes and terroir in the finished wine. Medium-to-full-bodied, the Gilroy is bright, youthful, and exuberant, redolent with black raspberries and back currants layered with notes of black pepper, mint, and earth. Supple tannins and moderate acidity lend balance while making this wine totally gluggable with or without food.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This bottling from four vineyards, with 12% Mourvèdre, shows loads of crushed carnation, rose petal, cranberry, and raspberry on the nose. There is a compelling freshness to the palate, with potpourri and lavender flavors meshing into a background of pomegranate and rosewater." (8/1/18)
