Brancott Estate has achieved iconic status in New Zealand, mainly for making the Marlborough region synonymous with crisp, tropical Sauvignon Blancs. Dating all the way back to 1973, the property is widely credited as having been the first to plant vines in the Marlborough region. Never resting on their laurels and always at the forefront of innovation, the folks at Brancott saw Pinot potential in Marlborough’s alluvial soils and were the first to plant this noble varietal as well.
Winemaker Patrick Materman has been plying his craft at Brancott for over 25 vintages and is widely regarded as one of the top authorities on winemaking in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. In crafting his Pinot Noir, Materman works with the objective to capture and showcase distinct and bright fruit flavors unique to the Marlborough region. While this wine does spend some time aging in a range of oak barrels ranging from new to mature, it it the intense, bright clean fruit that is the focus.
Today’s wine is classic New Zealand Pinot Noir. Aromas of blackberries, truffles, and baking spice lead to a medium-bodied, silky palate of cherries and raspberries laced with toasty oak, savory herbs, and nutmeg. Pliant, velvety tannins are balanced out by vibrant acidity that carries the wine to a long finish.
