The name "Bread & Butter" refers to two aspects of winemaking that are the hallmarks of the wine's quality and popularity: oak aging and malolactic fermentation. Oak aging lowers astringency, adds richness and texture as well as flavors that can be associated with bread - toast, vanilla, nuttiness. Malolactic fermentation is the process by which malic acid is converted to lactic acid. This process creates softness and richness reminiscent of butter (from winery notes). Together, these practices bring forth wines with richness and secondary flavors that compliment and enhance the fruit characteristics of the grapes.
The 2016 Bread & Butter Pinot Noir indeed belies its ridiculously low price tag. Medium-to full-bodied, it offers generous notes of cherries and raspberries, with hints of cassis, on the nose and palate. Accents of cedar, woodsmoke and savory herbs weave around those fruit characters, adding depth and complexity. Its long and velvety smooth finish will make you very happy that you bought 6 bottles.
