PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Tom Burgess had a passion for Cabernet Sauvignon that he parlayed into a career with a winery bearing his name established in 1972. Looking to produce top-notch wines from this noble grape, he purchased high-altitude vineyard land planted by the Ponchetta and Rossini families, Swiss immigrants from the Canton of Ticino. Reflecting the rugged, extreme conditions of the vineyards in their homeland, this difficult-to-cultivate site brought forth wines of immense power and depth.
Expanding on his holdings, he acquired Souverain Estate and its Napa Valley vineyards. Souverain's winemaker Bill Sorenson stayed on and remained Burgess' winemaker for 41 years.
Today, Burgess Cellars is owned by Gaylon Lawrence, Jr., who works with Winemaker Meghan Zobeck and Estate Director Garrett Hales to build upon the Burgess legacy by honoring the winery's impeccably high standards and respecting Napa's glorious terroir.
The 2016 Burgess Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon "Contadina" is 90% cabernet sauvignon from Sorenson Vineyard blended with 6% petit verdot and 4% malbec, both from Haymaker Vineyard. Stainless steel fermented and aged in a combination of 15% new and 85% neutral French oak, it is "a dense and concentrated cabernet sauvignon with aromas and flavors of confectionary blackberry and stewed cassis. The lush fruit is brought into balance by high-toned herbal aromatics of mint, sage, and sweet tobacco. (from winery notes) The wine finishes long, with firm yet pliant tannins that seamlessly coexist with the wine's velvety texture.

92 points, James Suckling:
"This offers ripe blackberries and cassis, baking spices, and some earthiness, too. Full-bodied with juicy tannins, deep fruit, and a long finish that shows a
touch of mint. Firm at the end. Try in 2023." (12/5/21)
