One of the most decadent wines in the world, Amarone gets its richness and power from a winemaking technique that sets it apart from its peers. It is made from grapes that are dried on straw mats for 12 to 14 weeks BEFORE vinification. Known as the appassimento method, this process concentrates the sugars and fruit characters and increases the juice's skin contact. The resulting wine is intensely flavored and well-structured with an ABV of between 15-18%. Expensive? Yes, but every once in a while we get our hands on on that falls into the affordable zone. No wine lover should go without experiencing the glory of Amarone, so feast your palate on today’s Three-Pack Feature the 2015 Ca’Erto Amarone della Valpolicella!
Ca’Erto is the American label for wines made by the Monte Tondo winery, which is nestled in the gentle hills of Soave, just a few kilometers from Verona, on a slope overlooking the valley. Three generations of winemakers have handed down the precious art of wine-making here, born from a love for their land and their roots, together with the knowledge that it is only through hard work, drive, and determination that the best results can be obtained. In the hills, current proprietor and vine-grower Gino Magnabosco, together with his family, carry on the traditions that have been handed down by his parents and grandparents.*
Today’s wine is a blend of 70% Corvina and 30% Rondinella that is fermented with skin contact for 25 days after the grapes have been dried via the appassimento method. Aged for 40 months in barrique prior to bottling, it is rich and full-bodied, with aromas of black fruits and dried flowers and a palate bursting with flavors of black cherries and cassis with accents of vanilla and sweet baking spice, with moderate acidity that emerges on the mid-palate and brings the wine to a long finish.
The 2015 Ca’Erto Amarone della Valpolicella is a 2019 Decanter Silver Medal World Wine Award Winner with a 90-point rating: “Wonderful savory notes of coffee, cacao, and cumin with unctuous ripe plum, blackcurrant, and cherry compote. Elegant, harmonious, and extremely well-structured. A real treat.”
