Founders Jerry & Joyce Cain initially purchased 550 acres of the historic McCormick Ranch on Spring Mountain in 1980. From the release of their very first vintage in 1976 until today, this family-owned and operated winery (now owned by Jim & Nancy Meadlock) has consistently been rated among THE great, blue-chip properties in California. Winemaker Chris Howell has been crafting the wines for for over 30 years, going back to 1991. Cain Five, a Bordeaux-style blend of the five classic grape varieties is the flagship upon which Cain has built its reputation.
Cain Five is an exotic, one-of-a-kind wine. The Five referring to the five classic Bordeaux grape varieties... Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, & Petit Verdot.
The primary feature that makes this wine special though is where the fruit grows. Even on Spring Mountain, the Cain Vineyard is unique. Cradled in a bowl on the crest of the Mayacamas Range, vines are planted on exposures toward all points of the compass, at elevations ranging from 2100 feet down to 1400 feet, giving tremendous diversity within the vineyard. The soils here are almost all uniformly thin and poor, derived from sandstone, shale, and clay.
The complexity does not end in the vineyard, but continues on throughout the élévage in the bottle and in the cellar. Winemaker Howell blends early to allow the wine to come together and to find it's balance. Howell tends each vintage of the young Cain Five with an eye toward letting it continue to develop and evolve in the barrel. And so, along with the “garrigue” of the Cain Vineyard comes truffles, a bit of earthiness, and some lovely floral notes of roses and jasmine. All of these elements come together in the bottle, particularly in a wine that has been allowed to cellar gracefully as is the case with this 2009.
