PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Grape growers and winemakers Flavia Del Seta and Francesco Galgani are steadfastly committed to producing organically farmed Vernaccia di San Gimignano using a minimalist intervention approach to vinification. To that end, their farm is certified organic; they also employ a number of biodynamic practices to enhance the biodiversity in their soils like fertilizing with compost and planting and sowing cover crops.*
Each of their cuvées is vinified using spontaneous fermentation; no cultured or selected yeasts are used to provoke fermentation as native yeasts are allowed to do their magic naturally. The addition of sulfur during the winemaking process and bottling is kept to an absolute minimum.*
The wines, made from younger and older plantings of vernaccia depending on the desired complexity and texture, are intended to be the purest expression of the grape variety and appellation as possible. Known for their freshness and aging potential, these wines are benchmark expressions of one of Italy’s most famous white wines.*
The 2019 Cappella Sant'Andrea Vernaccia di San Gimignano "Prima Luce" is named after the vineyard from which it is sourced, which is called "first light" because the sun rises over the vineyard before any other site on the estate. A single vineyard bottling from 50-year-old vines, it is fermented on the lees in amphorae, refined on the lees for an additional 12 months, and bottled after a brief stint in oak barrels.
Compelling and lushly textured, today's wine beguiles with aromas of lemon zest and honeysuckle, with hints of cardamom, white peaches, and Honeydew melon. That white peach takes center stage on the full and rich palate. Honeysuckle reappears as a supporting player, along with accents of lemon, wet stone, and Spring herbs that unfold on the tongue layer by layer. The wine is infused with balancing acidity that brings it to a long and satisfying finish.
