Casa E. di Mirafiore was founded in the 1870s by King Vittorio Emanuel II of Savoy and named for his son Emanuele, Count of Mirafiore. The estate stretches out amid the most celebrated hills in the villages of Serralunga d’Alba and Barolo. Oscar Farinetti, owner of Fontanafredda, is the current proprietor; he, along with winemaker Danilo Drocco strives to craft wines that honor the terroir and traditional winemaking techniques of the region, such as lengthy maturation on the skins and use of large oak casks.*
Vigna Lazzarito, located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba, is one of the most prestigious vineyards in Piedmont and produces magnificent, layered Barolos. Situated about 1200 feet above sea level with south-west exposure, it is rich in calcareous marl with good permeability. These conditions of terroir bring forth fragrant and harmonious Barolos that come into their own beautifully with 8-10 years of aging.
94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Barolo Lazzarito represents some of the estate’s best fruit in Serralunga d’Alba. The wine delivers a dark and brooding personality with dark berry aromas, cassis, licorice, tar, cola and enormous complexity throughout. The wine shows a stunning evolution in the glass. It also has the inherent qualities for longer aging. The structure and the acidity show firmness and bright crispness respectively. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030." (6/27/13)
92 points, Wine Spectator:
"This is solid, offering ripe cherry, raspberry, leather and spice flavors. Firmly structured, with fine balance and a fresh finish. The aftertaste evokes spice and mineral. Best from 2016 through 2032. 1,500 cases made." (5/31/14)
92 points, Vinous:
"Dark plums, black cherries, smoke, menthol, licorice and tar blossom on the 2008 Barolo Lazzarito. There is more than enough fruit to fill out the wine's broad shoulders nicely. Some slightly rough edges remain in a Barolo that is mostly about power, but there is also an excellent sense of harmony. Sage, rosemary, new leather and game flow through the finish. Winemaker Danilo Drocco gave the 2008 40-50 days on the skins and aged the wine in cask, with minimal rackings throughout elevage." (1/14)
