PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:

Castello di Albola is located in the municipality of Radda, which is situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG appellation. Radda has a history of grape cultivation that dates back to the time of the Etruscans. The Acciaiuoli family were the first proprietors if the estate; they planted its lofty vineyards in the 15th century as a symbol of their high status. Over the centuries, many noble Tuscan families have owned the property. In 1979, the Zonins acquired Castello di Albola, promising to uphold the estate’s excellence for future generations. The wines produced here have earned the iconic “Gallo Nero” symbol from the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, which guarantees the highest standards in winemaking. (from winery notes)

This wine has been crafted from 100% Sangiovese)sourced from the Santa Caterina vineyard, a 5 hectare site located at the foot of the medieval village of Albola, around 550 meters above sea level, facing fully to the south. This area is characterized by a clayey soil, with good internal drainage due to the presence of fine gravel.

The Santa Caterina vineyard was harvested in the first few days of October. The grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, where they were left to macerate for about 3 weeks. Once the malolactic fermentation process came to an end, 50% of the wine was placed in barriques and the other half in large Slavonian oak barrels to age for 14 months, followed by a further year and a half in the bottle.

The finished wine pours into the glass with a deeply extracted ruby red hue. The aromas expand up from the glass and are quite intense, with layered, concentrated notes of ripe red fruits. The front of the palate is classic Sangiovese with all of its balanced acidity and black cherry. Fleshy and full bodied through the mid-palate, the wine offers great length on the finish with notable ripe, sweet tannins that suggest this wine with age gracefully for many years. Bring on the Steak Florentine!!

Wine Spectator: Rated 95 Points
"Top notes of berry and dark flowers are underscored by earth, stone and tobacco flavors in this red, which is elegant despite the dense structure, yet it’s the vibrant acidity that defines this overall. Shows terrific length. Best from 2022 through 2036."

James Suckling: Rated 94 Points
"This is a good example of a Gran Selezione where the fruit is the main attraction as opposed to the wood. It falls into red territory, which includes dried red plums, cranberries, dried nutmeg and rose petals. Full-bodied and rather Burgundian, if the comparison is permitted. Fine, velvety tannins, zesty acidity and a long, very structured finish. Drink now or hold."
