PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:

Castello di Albola is located in the municipality of Radda, which is situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG appellation. Radda has a history of grape cultivation that dates back to the time of the Etruscans. The Acciaiuoli family were the first proprietors if the estate; they planted its lofty vineyards in the 15th century as a symbol of their high status. Over the centuries, many noble Tuscan families have owned the property. In 1979, the Zonins acquired Castello di Albola, promising to uphold the estate’s excellence for future generations. The wines produced here have earned the iconic “Gallo Nero” symbol from the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, which guarantees the highest standards in winemaking. (from winery notes)

Today's wine is a monovarietal (100% Sangiovese) sourced from a 9-hectare, steeply-sloped, high-altitude vineyard on the estate with terrific sun exposure and clay-based soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in stainless steel tanks; the wine is aged in a combination of French oak barriques (10%) and Slovenian oak barrels (90%) for 2 years. These conditions beautifully manifest in the finished wine, which is seamless yet complex and displays amazing freshness for its age. Medium-bodied, its aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and mint give way to a palate where red cherry takes center stage. Layers of plum, strawberry, sagebrush, and dusty earth weave around the primary fruit characters. The tannins are pliant and the acidity is bright, which gives the fruit its youthful kick.

92 points, Wine Spectator:
"Black cherry and black currant flavors are the hallmarks of this fruity red. Floral, earth and mineral accents chime in, supported by a stern base of tannins. Vibrant, showing fine length. Drink now through 2024." (5/31/17)

91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Alluring scents of chopped mint, ripe berry, new leather, clove and a floral note all come together on this elegantly structured wine. The taut palate delivers black cherry, raspberry, fresh herb, and dark baking spice while polished tannins provide structure. Drink 2017–2022." (6/1/16)

91 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva is another wine in the Castello di Albola portfolio that boasts a big jump forward in quality and appeal. This is a full and generous Tuscan red that illustrates the hallmarks of a warm vintage. The quality of fruit is dark and plush, yet the estate's cool and high altitude vineyards contribute to the wine's overall acidity and freshness. This wine is truly redolent of classic Sangiovese aromas of blue flower and moist earth." (12/30/16)
